So I made it out of my very first SDCC alive, yay. As previously mentioned I wanted to do Sombra (Overwatch) and Alana (Saga)cosplays... well, I did neither lol. Though I had every intention to, I even bought all the fabric and materials for them, which I will now need to make in the future so it's not a complete waste.
No, instead I went with a femme version of Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy and Garnet of Steven Universe. I, as usual, waited about a month before my trip to start any sewing, nothing was started and I already had plans to simplify and take creative license to the characters. So when I was invited to a Marvel themed birthday party where guests were highly encouraged to dress as their favorite characters, the idea of going as the best rodent pilot of the universe was an obvious choice.

So I came up with two different versions of the costume, and took it to FB for a vote.
The romper sentiment was fairly unanimous haha.
With no time to order or shop for fabric I quickly raided all my fabric stashes for suitable materials. Sweet moments such as these exist to perpetuate one of my most cherished afflictions: hoarding. I found faux fur, upholstery vinyl, and exactly enough yardage of bright orange quilter's cotton.

I worked on it a few hours a night for a week. I hate making anything with fabric that has no amount of stretch, I had to refrain from making a lunch break trip to Joann's for a an orange knit to save me from this hell I created for myself. Surprisingly, it wasn't as terrible as I thought, most of my anxiety stemmed from my recently acquired belly fat the last year, and how I could make the form fitting jumpsuit flattering. I'm super glad I stuck with the quilter's cotton, of which I have no idea why I had 3 yards tucked away, like wtf was I planning to do with it when I got it 5 years ago? Tailoring the outfit was especially fun though, and when I say "fun" I mean an emotional tumult of frustration, tedium, and gratification.
Fun fact: Sharpies work wonders for adding color and dimension to faux fur. Also, best yummy party treats provided by @bakeitraine!
Holy hell so hyped about how well this fit, didn't get it completely finished before the party, so I had to finish his pack up a few days before I left for the con.
In an attempt to stay true to the spirit of Rocket the Rabbit at his best, I thought I'd throw some wrenches into an already complicated event and decided to make his pack into a functioning backpack with outer pocket. The side holster also served as a saddle bag for my phone and wallet. You can place a custom order for my backpack/harness combo on my Etsy, I've only made 5 available to order because of my limited supplies, so I'm not sure when I'll make it again. Get one like RIGHT NOW if you want it before Halloween tho ;) ;) Seriously.
Also didn't have my gun or ears done before the above photoshoot (photo cred to the bestie @antelogi), so here are some goofy shots of the complete look at Comic-Con...
Since it was the first time the entire family would be at Comic-Con together we obviously had to do an epic group cosplay. A few ideas were thrown around like Avengers or Justice League, but we all unanimously settled on Steven Universe! My character of choice was Garnet, but with an 80's glam punk twist...
So I don't have any dope ass progress pictures like my Rocket Raccoon because I literally made this thing in one day. I was so excited to take pictures at @antelogi's apartment pool. I tried to explain the significance of the pool to her from that one episode where Greg and Steven take Garnet with them on a road trip to that one place where Greg buys the car wash brushes and Garnet splits into Ruby and Sapphire and Ruby basically evaporates the pool and Steven gets pizza cut into squares, also major beachy vibes from our limited options at 9pm in Pasadena haha. You can find this dress on my Etsy too, it's so freaking comfortable, had no issues just lounging around in it all day at the convention. Weather played a huge role in the design for both pieces, I knew I'd be in line outside in the San Diego Summer for hours.
If I knew how to swim, I would've jumped in. Most of my favorite pics of this outfit was at the con though, because I was rolling 8 deep with my crew *gang signs*.
We even managed to cut our way all the way to the front of the line for the Steven Universe panel cause of how hard we went on the cosplays.
Welp, this was the longest blog post I've ever made, though it's really just like 50 pictures of myself, thanks for visiting!! Here's a vid of Rebecca Sugar on her uke for the Adventure Time panel...
